Symbolism-Wise, Lights Out at the Eifel Tower Is a Really Dumb Move

In honour of those who were massacred yesterday in Paris, officials decided to turn off the lights--all of them--on the structure that most symbolizes France.

My questions: How, exactly, is that a fitting tribute to those brave souls who were cut down for cocking a snook at supremacist Islam? Isn't turning off the lights more symbolic of defeat than it is of defiance?

Had I any say in the matter, I would have suggested the lights be turned up higher than ever. That would have been a more appropriate homage to those at Charlie Hebdo who mounted the barricades so the light of freedom would continue to shine, and who, for their bravery, paid the ultimate price.
